Physical Education

It is evident that the possession of certain basic knowledge about health is essential if each individual is to achieve for self, family, and community an optimal level of wellness.  A total health program will address issues related to the wellness of the individual:  physical, emotional, intellectual, social, mental and spiritual growth, development and well being.  Students will gain an understanding about how individuals can prevent most health problems through positive health behaviors.  To help students deal with health issues, individuals need accurate information, education, health-promoting services and support.  Students will learn how to evaluate resources and effectively use this information to make positive decisions in their lives.

Physical Education / Health

Physical Education 10

0.5 credit

New activities are introduced and taught while improvement of skills learned at the middle school are refined.  The primary objectives of this course are development of personal health habits and developing an understanding of the importance of lifetime fitness.  Team activities are used to teach cooperation, sportsmanship, and basic skills.
Physical Education 11

0.5 credit

Students participate in lifetime activities to achieve the objectives of continued development of personal health habits, socialization skills, individual sport skills, and incorporation of physical fitness into everyday life.
Health Education

0.5 credit

This course addresses the issues of a total health program related to the wellness of the individual:  physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social growth, development and well being.  Students gain an understanding of how individuals can prevent most health problems through positive health behaviors.  They learn how to evaluate resources and effectively use the information to make positive decisions in their lives.

Goals for Health

1.  evaluate one's past and present health practices, formulate own healthy life-style patterns and design positive changes for the future.
2.  develop an understanding of the relationship between health and wellness
3.  determine how heredity, environmental and lifestyle factors which place one at risk for disease and/or enhance your health
4.  develop an understanding of the decision-making process and value clarifications skills
5.  formulate plans to deal with teen pressures and learn communications skills which may help one deal with such pressures
6.  gain exposure to health resources that are available to help protect and promote wellness life-style patterns
7.  identify and assess one's responsibilities related to one's activities with others while moving through the life cycle
8.  gain understanding of consumer rights as they relate to health care
9.  develop skills in critical thinking through analysis and interpretation of health resources
10. demonstrate respect for the feelings and ideas of others, as well as demonstrate respect through positive communication skills

Advanced Fitness

0.5 credit

This course is geared towards varsity athletes.  This class will meet five times per week and consist of weight training (using the Bigger, Faster, Stronger workout program), agility, quickness, and speed training.  Advanced Fitness will be a physically demanding workout geared at improving the physical elements necessary to be a successful athlete.  Currently this class is offered to seniors.
